— School Data Rooms Bring Data Out of the Drawers and Into the Open

The information school administrators collect is great however, they usually end up storing them – literally. Accountability and assessment initiatives are forcing schools to bring data out of drawers and into the open. Some are taking this one step further with school data rooms, where teachers are able to view student information in a well-organized and easy manner.

Walls of colored sticky notes are the walls at Gilliard Elementary School, Mobile, Alabama. The notes provide teachers with the information about how their students are performing in math and reading standards as well as attendance and discipline records.

The aim is to help teachers in identifying and addressing the needs of students, before they get out of hand. For example, if a student has not met his or her reading goal the teacher might offer additional practice in class or work with that student outside of school. If a student has a problem with their behavior, the teacher could recommend counseling or even consider removing that child from class.

Additionally, by putting the data in the forefront teachers can also share their achievements with their students – a crucial aspect of Baker’s plan. In the spring of 2011 an unemployed student proudly stood up to explain that he had accomplished his goal of reading.

Before you commit to a data room for your school, be sure you can ensure the privacy of students and follow FERPA guidelines. This is especially true for data displays in the classroom, in which sensitive information such as counseling sessions and disciplinary actions can be revealed accidentally.
